On Tuesday, April 21 the Marea Verde (Green Tide) organization reported that during the COVID-19 quarantine at least 210 women have been killed.
MEXICO CITY.- Last Tuesday, the Marea Verde organization reported that during the COVID-19 quarantine at least 210 women have been killed.
The group details that of that number, 163 are femicides, and 16 of the victims are girls under the age of 14.
According to these numbers, this type of crime had an increase of 9.1% so far in quarantine, which means 57 more victims compared to the same period last year.
Guanajuato is the state that registers the most cases, followed by the State of Mexico, Michoacán, Jalisco, and Chihuahua.
Renata Villarreal, the spokeswoman for Marea Verde Mexico, indicated that attacks against women in confinement have increased as they lose “support networks” as co-workers, friends, neighbors who help them and “make them escape their violent reality”.
One of the sources on which the Marea Verde group relies to document the figures is the femicide map by María Salguero, an astrophysical engineer.
Marea Verde adds that shelters are being promoted as an emergency measure in this situation.
