San Miguel de Allende.- A young man who refused to wear a mask in the center of the city and who physically attacked the policewomen who asked him to put it on, was arrested by an element that came in support of her companions.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:45 am this Saturday on Mesones Street, near the Plaza Cívica.

A couple of female agents invited citizens to wear face masks those who did not have one were given one. They are part of the group that the Ministry of Public Security appointed for this task, in order to safeguard the health of San Miguel residents and those who visit this municipality.

When they noticed that the young man was not wearing a mask, the police told him that he should use it; He showed one that he had in his hand and said: “Here I bring it, but I’m not going to wear it.” The agents reiterated the request, but he again refused and continued on his way, with the mask in hand.

In a third attempt, the police officers indicated that their priority was to safeguard the health of the population in the face of the covid-19 pandemic, and again they invited him to wear the mask correctly.

The young man replied that it was not the responsibility of the Police to ask citizens to wear face masks, so he ignored them once more and continued on his way. The agents blocked his way and told him that he could not leave the place if he refused to wear a mask, since in San Miguel de Allende it is mandatory.

In response, the young man insulted the uniformed women and pushed one of them. The agents requested support from their colleagues; Before the arrest was made, and when he realized that he would be arrested for the attacks, the young man put on the mask he had in his hand and began to shout at people to record him, trying to leave the place.

The young man resisted arrest, but was finally subdued and transferred to the holding cells, from where he left hours later.

The measures adopted in advance by the municipal government, such as the mandatory use of a face mask , helped make San Miguel de Allende one of the municipalities with more than 200 thousand inhabitants with the lowest rate of infections, active cases and deaths from covid-19 in the country.

The Ministry of Public Security reiterated the call to the population and visitors to attend to all preventive measures such as the use of face masks, constant hand washing, respecting the healthy distance, and use of antibacterial gel so that San Miguel de Allende continues to be an exemplary and safe destination, and the economic recovery continues.
