Will it snow in Guanajuato? These municipalities could be painted white

136

During the winter season, especially between January and February 2025, the arrival of cold fronts is expected, which could affect the state of Guanajuato. These frontal systems usually bring with them drops in temperature, increasing the probability of snowfall in the high areas of the state. The SMN has predicted that, during this period, minimum temperatures in mountainous regions of Guanajuato could range between 0°C and 5°C, with possible frost and fog banks in mountainous areas.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) updates its agrometeorological frost forecasts and maps daily, providing estimates for the next three days. These maps indicate the areas with the highest probability of frost and possible snowfall, based on statistically adjusted numerical models to improve their accuracy.

Regions prone to snowfall:

  • Sierra de Lobos: Located in the north of the state, this mountain range includes municipalities such as León, San Felipe and Ocampo. Historically, it has recorded snow and sleet events, especially when temperatures drop below 0°C. In December 2023, light snowfall was reported in this region, indicating its susceptibility to these phenomena.
  • Sierra de los Agustinos: Located in southern Guanajuato, it influences municipalities such as Coroneo and Acámbaro. Although snowfall in this area is less frequent, weather conditions can lead to snow or sleet, especially at altitudes above 2,500 meters.
  • Sierra Gorda: This mountainous region extends across municipalities such as Xichú, Atarjea, Santa Catarina, and Victoria. The altitude and low winter temperatures make these areas prone to snowfall. In February 2022, sleet events were recorded in municipalities in the Sierra Gorda, evidencing their vulnerability to these phenomena.

Recommendations:

Since weather forecasts can vary, it is essential that the population and local authorities stay informed through daily updates from the SMN. In addition, it is recommended to take the following precautions during the winter season:

  • Civil Protection: Establish contingency plans to address possible effects due to snowfall, such as interruptions in communication routes or basic services.
  • Farmers and ranchers: Implement measures to protect crops and livestock from low temperatures and possible frost.
  • General population: Avoid prolonged exposure to the cold, wear appropriate clothing and stay informed about weather conditions.
