In recent years, there has been an exponential growth in the motorcycle registry in San Miguel de Allende, which has created a conflict for motorists, transporters, and also for the motorcycle owners themselves, especially due to the colonial roads that predominate in the World Heritage city.
The more than 145,000 motorcycles registered in Guanajuato have caused accidents daily, resulting in almost no compliance with regulations or gaps in them. In the municipality of San Miguel, more than 3,000 motorcycles can be counted.
The excess of motorcycles, recklessness, and lack of expertise have led to nearly 60,000 of the nearly 380,000 accidents in Mexico involving motorcycle riders.
The growth of this form of transportation is evident in the fact that, in November 2024 alone, more than 2,300 units were registered with the Guanajuato Ministry of Finance. Thus, in less than a decade, León’s motorcycle registry has grown, from 38,000 registered units in 2014 to 145,000 units by the end of 2024, of which 14,622 new motorcycles were registered.
