Not only has León been the city most benefited by the good rainfall recorded in May in years, but cities like Guanajuato, Dolores Hidalgo, and San Miguel de Allende have also seen the favorable weather in the last week of the month.
This Friday, starting at 5 p.m., in San Miguel de Allende, rains flooded the city in the evening, a situation welcomed by the population, as the Allende Dam is recovering.
In Guanajuato City, citizens began reporting heavy rain that caused the Olla Dam to overflow, a situation that normally occurs during the San Juan festivities, between the third and fourth week of June.
For some citizens, the rain was similar to a downpour, so the local population and tourists who visit Guanajuato on Friday nights were surprised by the excess water in the streets and tunnels of the Historic Center.
Among the streets most affected by the water and trash that descended from the top of the hill were Sangre de Cristo, Embajadoras, Paseo de la Presa, and the Miguel Hidalgo Underground.
Some residents had to clean up their businesses at dawn this Saturday to reopen their businesses, as mud and trash accumulated at the entrances to bakeries, grocery stores, wine shops, taco stands, and other establishments.
Likewise, boulevards such as Euquerio Guerrero and Miguel Hidalgo Extension also experienced flooding in some sections, to the point that some cars broke down due to the high water levels.
In Dolores Hidalgo, residents also reported heavy rain at 1 a.m., but no significant damage was reported in the city center, as was the case in San Miguel de Allende.
In León, another night of rain was recorded, adding to the good weather seen in the last week of May, something not seen in years.
Enrique de Haro Maldonado, director of the León Water and Sewerage System, reported that this week’s rainfall was the best in recent years in the municipality, delivering more than 61 millimeters of rain through Thursday, when 48 millimeters were recorded on that day alone.
However, he said he does not believe the levels seen in May 2018, when the city saw more rain, will be reached.
He lamented that the northern region still has not seen significant rainfall, with only 13 millimeters of rain added to the drought at the El Palote Dam, which was at 4 percent capacity a couple of weeks ago.
He added that the southern region of León has fared the best, with 70 millimeters of rain recorded last Thursday, a downpour that he emphasized fell in 30 minutes.
According to the National Water Commission (Conagua), there are good rainfall forecasts this year, which is just beginning, and cyclones are expected for the Pacific and Atlantic.
