Guanajuato woke up to the tragic news of a new attack in the municipality of Irapuato, an event that has shaken the state. During the celebrations of Saint John the Baptist, a group of armed men burst into the celebration and opened fire on attendees, leaving ten people dead and several injured.
According to local authorities, the attack occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Bustamante Street, at the corner of Comonfort Street, in the Barrio Nuevo neighborhood of Irapuato.
Minors were among the victims.
During her morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum deeply regretted the incident and confirmed that minors were among the deceased. She also indicated that the necessary investigations are underway to clarify what happened.
“Unfortunately, it happened. The Security Cabinet will provide more information shortly. Yes, it is a regrettable multiple homicide that is already being investigated (…) In this case, it was a confrontation, but, unfortunately, children died. What happened is very regrettable. The investigation is underway, and we will continue to collaborate with the governor, to the extent possible, as well as with federal forces, who are also doing their part,” he stated.
Video of the attack during the celebrations is circulating on social media showing the moments before the attack. In the recording, the attendees can be seen forming a circle while a member of the band sings: “Tubo, tube, down, further down!” Moments later, multiple gunshots and panicked screams are heard.
Authorities condemn the attack in Irapuato
The Irapuato government issued a statement strongly condemning the events, calling them a “cowardly act.” She also expressed her solidarity with the victims’ families.
“The municipal government and public administration regret and condemn the attack that occurred Tuesday night at a home on Bustamante Street, in the Barrio Nuevo neighborhood, and express their solidarity with the victims, their families, and the citizens affected by this cowardly act,” the local official stated.
For her part, the governor of Guanajuato, Libia Dennise García, also condemned the armed attack that left ten people dead and several more injured.
“I strongly condemn the violent events that occurred in Irapuato. I express my solidarity and condolences to the affected families, and reiterate our commitment to the safety of the people of Guanajuato,” the state governor stated through her social media channels.
