Following the assassination of Carlos Manzo Rodríguez, the mayor of Uruapan in Michoacán, the governor of Guanajuato, Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo, confirmed that several mayors in the state have protection plans implemented by the Ministry of Security and Peace as part of preventative measures against risks associated with their public office.
“In Guanajuato, we maintain close communication with the mayors. There are several cases in which it has been determined to provide support and protection when there are indications of threats or vulnerability,” she stated in an interview.
García Muñoz Ledo assured that her government maintains constant coordination with federal and municipal authorities to guarantee the safety of the mayors, and emphasized that preventative measures are being strengthened following acts of violence in neighboring states.
In Guanajuato, nine mayors currently have National Guard protection, including seven from the Morena party, as well as the mayor of Moroleón, from the Citizens’ Movement party, and the independent mayor of Juventino Rosas.
