Twelve municipalities in Guanajuato are home to Indigenous populations and communities, according to the State Government during the commemoration of International Indigenous Peoples Day.
The ceremony was held in the municipality of Apaseo el Alto, where the governor of Guanajuato, Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo, recognized the importance of strengthening the recognition of the history, identity, and heritage of these communities.
During the event, Liz Esparza, Secretary of Human Rights of Guanajuato, explained that the municipalities with a presence of Indigenous communities are Atarjea, Comonfort, Dolores Hidalgo, Salvatierra, San Luis de la Paz, San Miguel de Allende, Santa Catarina, Valle de Santiago, Tierra Blanca, Victoria, Villagrán, and Xichú.
She pointed out that each of these municipalities preserves traditions, languages, and forms of community organization that have endured for centuries, despite processes of social and urban transformation.
