Mayor Mauricio Trejo swore in Eleazar Romero as the second chronicler of the city of San Miguel de Allende, an appointment that recognizes his deep passion for local history and his commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of the municipality, who will have the task of seeking recognition of Ignacio Allende as the true “Father of the Nation.”
During the 8th Ordinary Session of the City Council, José Eleazar Romero, before the plenary, took the oath as the second chronicler of the city. It was the municipal president Mauricio Trejo who contextualized the historical responsibility that falls on the guardian of the history of the Heritage City.
Mayor Mauricio Trejo highlighted the importance of preserving and transmitting the history of San Miguel de Allende to future generations, emphasizing that the city is a unique place, being the true Cradle of Independence and with a rich cultural tradition that ranges from the fight for Independence to its relevance as one of the main points on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro.
“San Miguel de Allende is a unique and repeatable municipality. Independence was forged here, it was the first free municipality, one of the most important customs houses and a nerve center of the Camino Real. We have a rich history that we must preserve and share,” said the mayor.
The mayor added, “San Miguel is the municipality with the greatest cultural wealth in the entire country and in all of America. I invite you to take up a fight with us (municipal government) because next year San Miguel de Allende will be celebrated and commemorated as the first free municipality and there we will have the guidelines to change the poorly told history of the textbooks. We must make it clear that the father of the country is not Priest Hidalgo (Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla), the father of the country is Ignacio Allende!, a San Miguel native.”
Trejo also highlighted the importance of the position of chronicler, pointing out that it is not just about accumulating information, but about sharing and disseminating the historical events that have shaped the city. “Being a chronicler of the city is not just about feeding on information, it is about making it accessible and shared with all San Miguel residents. The history of San Miguel is a treasure that must be known and understood by everyone,” he added.
The mayor congratulated Eleazar Romero for his dedication to local history and his contribution to the conservation of cultural heritage, recalling his participation in July 2008, when he drafted the text that led UNESCO to name San Miguel de Allende and its Atotonilco Sanctuary as a World Heritage City.

In addition, he stressed that Eleazar’s appointment as chronicler was based on his own merit, since there were no other candidates, which reflects the recognition of his effort and commitment to the history of San Miguel.
Trejo called on the people of San Miguel to join in the effort to recognize and spread the historical events that have forged the identity of the city, highlighting that the fight to recognize Ignacio Allende as the true “Father of the Nation” is one of the next historical battles that must be won.
Finally, the mayor expressed his confidence that Eleazar will play a key role in the construction of the historical legacy of the city, inviting all citizens to collaborate in this important process of preservation and transmission of local history.
This event marks a milestone in the history of San Miguel de Allende, with Eleazar taking over a legacy of knowledge and dedication to continue enriching the collective memory of the world heritage city.
