The Guanajuato State Government recently launched the “Internet for the People” program, an initiative that seeks to provide free internet access in various parts of the state. This effort is part of a broader strategy to reduce the digital divide and promote technological inclusion in areas that have historically lacked adequate connectivity.
The main objective of “Internet for the People” is to ensure that all citizens of Guanajuato, regardless of their geographic location or socioeconomic status, have access to quality internet. This will allow residents to access information, educational services, job opportunities, and communication platforms, thus promoting the economic and social development of the benefited communities.

The program involves the installation of Wi-Fi antennas and access points in strategic locations in different municipalities across the state. These points are typically located in public squares, community centers, libraries, and schools, facilitating access to a wide range of users. Although a complete official list of locations has not been published, a detailed coverage map is expected to be released in the coming weeks so that citizens can identify the nearest access point.

The speed of the service provided by “Internet for the People” varies depending on the location and the infrastructure available in each area. In urban areas, where the telecommunications infrastructure is more robust, speeds are expected to be sufficient for activities such as web browsing, social media use, and standard-quality video streaming. In rural or hard-to-reach areas, speeds may be lower due to technical limitations, but the goal is to ensure a stable connection that allows for basic online tasks.
How to Connect to the Service
To use the “Internet for the People” service, users must follow these steps:
- Activate Wi-Fi: Turn on the Wi-Fi function on your device (phone, tablet, laptop).
- Search for Available Networks: Wait for the device to detect available Wi-Fi networks in the area.
- Select a Network: Search for and select the network named “Internet para la Gente” or a similar network that indicates the free service.
- Connect: Once the network is selected, the device will connect automatically. In some cases, a home page may open asking you to accept the terms and conditions before browsing.
Specific Case: Villa de las Flores Neighborhood, León, Guanajuato
One of the antennas for the “Internet para la Gente” program has been installed in the Villa de las Flores neighborhood. The “La Silla Rota” team visited on Wednesday, March 12th to evaluate the service’s operation in this area. During the test, it was found that the “Internet para la Gente” network appeared in the Wi-Fi connections available on mobile devices, and it was possible to connect to it. However, despite the successful connection, internet access was not achieved; the connection did not provide real access to the network.
Neighbors confirmed this situation, stating that although they can connect to the internet, the internet service is not yet operational. This inconvenience has raised expectations among residents, who hope the service will be working properly in the short term.
