During Holy Week, the municipality of San Miguel de Allende once again becomes the stage for religious and cultural expressions that are part of the city’s living heritage.
One of the most significant traditions is the Visit of the Seven Houses, which takes place on the afternoon of Holy Thursday. The faithful visit at least seven churches where special altars are set up to house the Blessed Sacrament. The practice is accompanied by symbols such as blessed palm crosses, chamomile, bread, or small devotional images.
During these days, the churches are filled with traditional aromas such as incense, chamomile, and fennel, while the altars stand out for their artistic craftsmanship.
“It is a paragon of ingenuity, art, and devotion,” described Acacio Martínez Rodríguez, head of the Directorate of Culture and Traditions.
The culminating moment of Holy Week is on Good Friday, with the Holy Burial processions. One of the most representative is the Oratorio, which preserves 19th-century elements, both in its images and in the floats and the accompanying sacred music.
Among the pieces performed is Christus Factus Est, a Latin chant that has been a central part of the celebration for generations. The lyrics, which refer to Christ’s obedience and sacrifice, say:
“Christus factus est pro nobis obediens
usque ad mortem, mortem autem crucis.
Propter quod et Deus exaltavit illum,
et dedit illi nomen, quod est super omne nomen.”
The performance of this work, led by local musicians, “represents not only an act of art, but also a love of tradition and fidelity to the original texts,” the municipal official emphasized.
The day concludes with the image of the Virgin of Solitude, dressed in black, symbolically accompanying her son to the tomb. Their presence is considered a symbol of mourning, but also of hope and collective faith.
Easter celebrations in San Miguel de Allende bring together residents and visitors year after year, who respectfully participate in a cultural event that unites art, memory, and devotion.
