The head of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality, Jorge Anguiano, recommended that upon arriving in the city, you can approach the promoters accredited by the authorities; currently, there are 166 that are in compliance.

Check your tickets

It is also important to look at the tickets sold for guided tours, museum visits, or the student group, and verify that they have official stamps.

“Don’t be fooled, because there are some people who don’t have accreditation. Last week, we had some tourists who were scammed; the Tourist Police intervened, along with Inspection and Traffic, and meetings are being held to remove the people who aren’t accredited (…) two guides were removed, and three promoters remained without accreditation,” he explained.

He said the only sanction for these people is to remove them from the areas and prevent them from continuing to work to prevent repeat offenses.

How to identify fraud

But how can you identify an accredited guide or tour promoter and avoid fraud or deception? First, with their attire, as they wear a vest, usually brown or blue with the company logo, as well as their ID hanging on their chest. The ID includes the person’s information, such as their name, guide number, and the official logos of local and state authorities.

Once their identification was confirmed, Jorge Anguiano emphasized that tourists will NOT be required to pay in advance for any tourism services, especially for events such as student parties or tours.

Events such as GIFF and the Endemic Festival boosted tourism in Guanajuato City during the first weekend of the holiday season; a council member reports high hotel occupancy and highlights a new tourism promotion strategy.
Finally, the state official noted that there are service modules located in various locations throughout the city center, where up-to-date information on tourist activities is provided. There are also hotels with partnerships with tour companies, and information can be requested from your room, ensuring that your stay and activities are as pleasant as possible, without inconveniences due to non-compliance.
