Guanajuato Governor Libia Dennise García explained that as a result of the heavy rains recorded over the weekend, three municipalities in the state reported flooding: Apaseo el Grande, Celaya, and Silao, the former being the most affected due to its proximity to Querétaro.
“In Celaya, the Labradores canal overflowed and affected the neighborhood. We are conducting damage assessments with the municipality. In Silao, in the El Faro neighborhood, 23 homes were affected; they are now clear of water. The worst impact we experienced was in Apaseo el Grande, on the border with Querétaro, in the Caleras de Amexhe community. We were there in coordination with the mayor, and civil protection teams attended to the 30 homes that were affected by these floods,” she explained.
In the case of Celaya, the Municipal Drinking Water Board (JUMAPA) detected that a mattress was stuck in one of the accesses to the Labradores Canal, which prevented the normal flow of water during the rains, acting as a “plug.” Heavy machinery was used to remove the object, allowing the water level to begin to drop.
He explained that he is already in communication with his counterpart in Querétaro,
Mauricio Kuri, to prevent flooding resulting from the overflowing of the Apaseo River, which affected the communities of Caleras de Amexhe and Coachiti in Apaseo el Grande.
“I had the opportunity to speak with Governor Kuri about the Apaseo River and how it affected communities in Guanajuato,” he explained.
Finally, he said that alerts and preventive protocols will remain in place in Guanajuato in response to the rains, to protect the population and prevent loss of life.
