Guanajuato Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo emphasized that the state is actively working to integrate more municipalities into the Interurban Train project, the final route of which has not yet been defined.

“There is very good news coming soon. What I’m telling you is that we continue to work for Guanajuato. I also want to make it very clear: there are no achievements here from one government or another; the efforts that are made are always for the benefit of the people, and that is what we are seeking,” the governor stated.

She added that it is not yet certain whether the train will be able to pass through San Miguel de Allende or Dolores Hidalgo, but the intention is for more municipalities in the state to join this important connectivity project, as has already happened in León.

For his part, the mayor of San Miguel de Allende, Mauricio Trejo Pureco, affirmed that he will always support the main development initiatives promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum, although he emphasized that, should the train arrive in this municipality, it would be essential to establish a security strategy to avoid risks to the local economy.

I will always support President Claudia Sheinbaum’s main development initiatives, but if we see that it could become a reality that the train could also pass through San Miguel de Allende, I would urgently request a meeting to discuss the negative aspects of all this. Trejo recalled that San Miguel de Allende depends 84% on tourism, which requires maintaining high security standards to protect visitors and residents.

In this regard, he warned of a possible increase in the flow of Central American migrants seeking to reach the north of the country using the railways, which would require close coordination between the National Migration Institute, the National Guard, the municipal police, and the National Defense Ministry.

“It sounds bad that I’m against migrants being stationed here, but when you’re a municipal president, it’s not about what you think personally; it’s about how you think as a municipal president. A municipality must be as carefully maintained as a business, and it’s about the economy,” he warned.

The mayor added that the participation of migrants in criminal groups has been documented in other regions of the country, which constitutes a risk for San Miguel if preventative measures are not implemented.

“It’s very risky that we could have, as the figures have already shown, many Colombians and Salvadorans involved in criminal groups and assaulting pedestrians. Therefore, there must be a parallel strategy to ensure that this passenger train, which could also be used for tourism, is not used as transportation for undocumented immigrants trying to stay in this prosperous region, which could lead to an increase in crime,” he stated.

Thus, the debate about the Interurban Train in Guanajuato focuses not only on its contribution to mobility and tourism, but also on the need to guarantee security and protect the local economy from the potential challenges its passage through the region entails.
