The streets of San Miguel de Allende have begun to transform in preparation for the holiday season, and, as is tradition, the iconic brass stars have once again become the stars of the nighttime landscape. This year, thousands of handcrafted pieces made by San Miguel artisans have been installed throughout the municipality, restoring to the city that characteristic sparkle that attracts visitors from all over the world.
Although Christmas decorations are part of the municipality’s annual calendar, the presence of these stars holds a special significance for the residents, as they represent one of the city’s oldest crafts and a legacy passed down through generations. For many artisans, the season marks the moment when their work becomes more visible and their creativity becomes a fundamental part of San Miguel’s public image.
This year, the installation is being managed by the Directorate of Public Services and Quality of Life. Its director, Laura Adriana Flores Gómez, emphasized that the stars not only serve an aesthetic function but also aim to strengthen the bond between the community and its cultural identity. Each piece, she explained, is handmade in family workshops that dedicate weeks of work to meet the seasonal demand.
Residents of the Historic Center have expressed that the placement of the stars symbolically marks the beginning of the festivities. Merchants and tourism service providers believe that the lighting enhances the warm atmosphere that characterizes the destination at this time of year, and also boosts economic activity, since the decorated streets attract those who want to take photos or simply stroll under the sky covered with golden figures.
For their part, the artisans who produce these pieces say that seeing them hanging in the streets is a source of pride and recognition of their craft. Some comment that, although production increases considerably during this time, the effort is worthwhile knowing that their work is part of the city’s December scene.
The Municipal Government invited residents and visitors to explore the city center and the neighborhoods where the first stars have already begun to light up. With this, San Miguel de Allende begins a year-end that promises to look brighter and more connected to its artisanal roots.
