Due to the rise in assaults and robberies in San Antonio, calls are being made for increased surveillance in San Miguel.

An increase in vehicle break-ins—along with several cases of muggings targeting pedestrians—in the San Antonio neighborhood of San Miguel de Allende has alarmed residents. They are calling for an increased Public Security presence, asserting that patrols in the area are few and far between.

Residents of the aforementioned neighborhood note that thefts have proliferated in recent weeks; criminals are taking advantage of the cover of night—and the absence of security personnel—to break into vehicles and steal any valuables found inside.

“On this street alone, at least two neighbors have already had their cars broken into. I also know of others on Refugio Street whose vehicles were damaged so that thieves could extract items from them,” commented a resident of 28 de Abril Street.

According to those reporting the incidents, the thefts have occurred primarily on 28 de Abril Norte, Prolongación del Refugio, and Pila Seca streets. Consequently, they are urging municipal authorities to order more Public Security patrols, noting that officers currently only show up after an incident has already taken place.

“The other day, a police officer was driving around—patrolling for quite some time—but that was only after some young women were mugged just one street over. Since then, they haven’t returned,” remarked Don Toño, a local business owner in the area.
