During 2025, museums in Mexico recorded an influx of 52.2 million visitors, representing an increase of 0.6 million people compared to 2024. This is revealed in the most recent Museum Statistics report presented by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
Attendance was concentrated in three states, which collectively accounted for 63.2% of the national total. Mexico City (CDMX) topped the list with 25.8 million visits across 166 museums; followed by Nuevo León, with 4.7 million attendees across 47 venues; and Guanajuato, with 2.4 million people across 60 spaces.
The study, based on more than 191,000 direct interviews with visitors, outlines a profile of the audience: 61.9% of attendees hold a higher education degree, while 25.4% have completed upper secondary education. In terms of gender, women accounted for 54.3% of those interviewed. Regarding frequency of visits, 80.6% of respondents stated that they were visiting the museum for the first time within a 12-month period.
Conversely, 12.5% made two or three visits, and only 6.9% attended on four or more occasions. Regarding length of stay, 56.8% of visitors remained for less than one hour. On the economic front, 59.8% of museums operated under a permanent free-admission policy; 21.1% charged an entrance fee; and the remaining 19.1% offered free admission only on specific days of the week. “In the opinion of those who visited the museums, the primary reasons for non-attendance were as follows: a lack of publicity and promotion—or a lack of awareness regarding the collections on offer—at 18.2%; a lack of cultural interest or education, at 16.4%; and a lack of time, at 15.9%. In 2024, the main reasons for not visiting remained the same,” the report details.
Furthermore, it was announced that a total of 31,980 individuals were employed in public-facing roles, yielding a national average of 26 workers per museum. Of this workforce, 37.8% consisted of volunteers and social service interns.
Regarding internal offerings and the services available within these spaces in 2025, the report details that 89.5% of museums provided guided tours, while 49.4% offered artistic and cultural activities. Conversely, in the areas of inclusion and connectivity, the data reveals that only 34.9% of the venues possessed infrastructure for people with disabilities, and only 33.5% offered Wi-Fi access.
