The León Secretariat of Security, Prevention, and Citizen Protection (SSPPC) located and arrested Luis N., after he was identified as the alleged perpetrator of a brutal assault on a young woman during a robbery near the Guanajuato Cultural Forum.
This resulted from intelligence work, analysis, and the use of video surveillance technology.
The man has been turned over to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) to face justice.
According to authorities, Luis N.’s arrest stemmed from an investigation following the events of May 27. The León Police activated investigative protocols that included a thorough analysis of the assailant’s possible escape routes.
The key piece of evidence leading to his arrest was obtained through the network of cameras installed at bus stops and terminals of the Integrated Transportation System (SIT). Through these recordings, clear images of his face and clothing were obtained, which matched the physical descriptions provided by witnesses and the victim herself.
“As a result of these actions, Luis N was arrested and turned over to the State Attorney General’s Office for the corresponding investigations and the compilation of the case file,” explained the SSPPC (Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection).
It is worth noting that, throughout the case, the SSPPC provided support to the victim, in addition to maintaining constant monitoring to contribute to clarifying the facts and ensuring justice is served.
The violent assault caused widespread public outrage. According to reports circulating on social media, the attack occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Calzada de los Héroes, near the corner of Vasco de Quiroga Boulevard, in the La Martinica neighborhood, directly in front of the Forum Cultural, one of the areas considered safest in the city.
The victim was intercepted by a tall man who, without saying a word, struck her directly in the face with a rock in order to steal her cell phone and belongings, leaving her bleeding and with a significant injury to her eyebrow and left eye.
The young woman was helped by a passerby and was later taken to a hospital, where she required stitches and three days of medical leave due to the trauma.
This incident prompted students from the Anthropology, Culture and Art, and Political Science programs at the University of Guanajuato (UG) to hold a peaceful demonstration outside the institution a few days later. The students demanded greater security guarantees, arguing that public spaces have become vulnerable.
The students also stated that they frequently experience bicycle thefts within the parking lots of the cultural complex, without any intervention from the private security guards or the Forum’s administration providing access to the security camera footage.
The incident was also surrounded by controversy regarding the actions of those in charge of security. Citizens initially denounced alleged negligence on the part of the security guards at the venue and a nearby patrol car that, they claimed, did not intervene in time.
However, the León Public Security Secretariat issued an official statement at the time assuring that patrol cars arrived at the scene within the established average operational response time. The agency clarified that an ambulance had indeed been dispatched, but that medical services were canceled because those present decided to transport the injured woman themselves.
