This year the GIFF expands its horizons, as in addition to performing in Guanajuato, the capital city of the state of the same name, it will reach the cities of Silao and Irapuato.
Under the slogan “this pandemic is not going to win us, we are going to win it”, the Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF) inaugurated its 23rd edition from a drive-in theater and for the first time in its history from the city of Irapuato.
“COVID has closed many doors for us, but it has opened many opportunities for us, and coming to Irapuato has been one of those great opportunities that we were so close to that we did not know it,” said Sarah Hoch, executive director of the festival born in San Miguel of Allende.
Minutes before presenting the opening film “Los Lobos” (2019), by Mexican Samuel Kishi, Guanajuato state authorities and organizers took the stage of the drive-in to highlight Hoch’s work and the importance of culture in the state.
Between thunderous sounds and car horns, in the absence of applause, Hoch invited attendees to join the festival virtually and in person, since due to the coronavirus pandemic the festival had to be divided into both modalities for reasons of security.
This year, despite the complex circumstances, the event has a guest of great international relevance and that they had sought for 15 years, the American director David Lynch, who will be honored and will present iconic films of the creator such as “Eraserhead” (1977 ) and “Twin Peaks” (1992).
Among other personalities who will visit the meeting is the American director Benh Zeitlin, who will have the world premiere of his film “Wendy” (2020), as well as the director Conor Allyn and some actors from the film “No Man’s Land” (2020).

No However, this 2020 will not be in the tourist San Miguel de Allende for the measures the city has implemented by the pandemic.
Of 3,044 films from 127 countries received for the official selection of the festival, 170 films on display were chosen, 126 films in competition from 52 countries (46 feature films and 124 short films) of which 21 feature films and 41 short films are Mexican.
