The first edition of the San Miguel de Allende International Book Fair (Filsma) has concluded with great success, consolidating a significant cultural enrichment for the city.
Organized by the Directorate of Culture and Traditions, this literary and artistic fair underlined the importance of promoting reading among San Miguel residents and its diverse population.
Filsma 2024 was held with the aim of strengthening the public policy of municipal president Mauricio Trejo, who has promoted culture through reading.
During the closing ceremony, Raúl Vallejo, municipal treasurer, highlighted the importance of books in people’s lives, from childhood to professionalization.
“Finally, we managed to have our ‘First International Book Fair’. The book represents an entire institution in our lives, from when we are children and we pick up a coloring book, to see a story, a legend; as students, a textbook; “As professionals, a specialized book and here we were able to see everything,” said Vallejo.
One of the most outstanding events was the presentation by Olimpia Coral Melo, an activist who spoke about the Olimpia Law, a legislation that sanctions digital violence.
Her intervention opened a space for interaction with the public, mainly young people, emphasizing the need to recognize and sanction violence in the digital environment.
“It is very important (to have the Filsma), unfortunately the issue of education, of the issues of breaking the gender gaps in reading, in books, in salaries, in science and also now in digital spaces, holding this type of event marks a step forward in which we have access to all this information,” said Coral Melo.
The closing of the fair also included an artistic closing by the Querétaro String Orchestra, which offered a concert at the “El Nigromante” cultural center.
This event dazzled attendees with its music, while the Trío Azul Bohemia entertained hundreds of spectators in the Main Garden with its performance, putting a finishing touch to Filsma 2024.
With the realization of this first International Book Fair, the Municipal Government of San Miguel de Allende continues to promote the habit of reading among its inhabitants, positioning the city, a World Heritage Site, as a cultural ambassador of Guanajuato and a reference for Mexico in the world.
