Massacre in Guanajuato: Armed attack in Salamanca annex left five dead

Five people were killed and another five were injured in an armed attack on the night of Tuesday, October 1, in an annex located in the El Rosario neighborhood, in the southern area of the municipality of Salamanca, in the state of Guanajuato.

According to information from local media, the events occurred around 9:00 p.m. at the intersection of Reforma and Comunicación Norte streets. Witnesses said that a group of armed men arrived at the site aboard a red vehicle that violently rammed the white gate of the rehabilitation center, and after breaking into the place, the attackers began to shoot indiscriminately at the people present, including inmates and godparents.

At the time of the attack, there were approximately 30 people inside the annex. Four of the fatal victims were found inside the annex, while a fifth body was found on the street, a few meters from the place.

Neighbors in the area, alarmed by the explosions, made several calls to the 911 emergency system, alerting the authorities about the attack. Municipal Police officers and Red Cross paramedics immediately went to the scene.

The paramedics confirmed the death of five people due to the severity of the injuries caused by the shots; while the injured managed to travel by their own means to nearby hospitals to receive urgent care.

After the attack, the security forces, including members of the Municipal Police and the National Guard (GN), began a pursuit of those responsible, who fled in the same vehicle in which they arrived at the scene.

During the escape, the attackers scattered tire-puncturing devices, which caused three patrol cars to be disabled by damage to their tires on Valle de Santiago Avenue. Despite their efforts, the attackers managed to escape, and so far no arrests have been reported.

The municipal government of Salamanca condemned the attack, calling it a “cowardly act” and expressed its condolences to the families of the victims. “Our deepest condolences to the families affected by this tragic and regrettable event. In these events, five people lost their lives and five more were injured. The report was immediately attended to by elements of the Municipal Police, who together with the National Guard began a pursuit to find those responsible,” detailed the municipal authorities.

The area was cordoned off by security elements to allow the work of the experts of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), who began the first investigations. Numerous spent shells were found at the site, as well as other ballistic evidence that could constitute key evidence in the case.

The bodies of the deceased were transferred to the amphitheater of the Forensic Medical Service, where the legal autopsy will be performed to officially determine the causes of death and their identities.

In recent years, the region has seen an increase in the incidence of homicides and armed attacks, many of them related to criminal groups such as the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG).

It should be noted that just two days ago it was announced that the head of the Guanajuato Prosecutor’s Office, Carlos Zamarripa Aguirre, submitted his resignation after 15 years leading the institution.

In a letter shared by the governor, it is detailed that Zamarripa Aguirre notified his intention to leave office on September 27. The resignation, if accepted, will take effect as of January 1, 2025.
