The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation ordered the San Miguel government to halt patching work on the San Miguel de Allende – Doctor Mora highway.
Repair work began a few days ago after receiving no response from the federal agency for more than a year and a half. However, the Guanajuato branch of the SICT ordered the immediate halt.
In response to this order, the mayor of San Miguel demanded that the SICT immediately intervene on the road, which poses a danger to the public.
Mayor Mauricio Trejo Pureco announced that he “received a direct, clear, and categorical order” from Engineer Rafael Barraza, Deputy Director of Works for the SICT Guanajuato Branch, to suspend the patching work since the road falls under federal jurisdiction.
The request to repair the road has been voiced by citizens for over a year and intensified after the recent rains, when the road became impassable due to large, deep potholes in both directions and along the entire stretch, which also serves as a route to several communities.
The Municipal Government had announced that, although it is not its responsibility, it would carry out patching work for safety reasons. It also stated that they have been requesting road maintenance for over a year and a half, without receiving a response from the federal government.
“I am very sorry that this person gave this order. I am sorry because we have to comply with it. But at the same time, I am going to ask the same person, the Deputy Director of Works for the Guanajuato Delegation of SICT, Rafael Barraza, to do it yourself. If they prohibit the municipality from patching, then do it immediately because it is already dangerous to use this road,” the mayor demanded.
