With workshops in songwriting, music, graffiti, and painting, the San Miguel de Allende Center for Adolescents (CASA), through its “Ranchero Pandillero” program, seeks to prevent young people who have experienced violence or addiction from falling into a life of crime.

“We offer talks and workshops as tools to provide young people with a different alternative. We know that there has been an increase in illicit substance use in Guanajuato; therefore, we work with young people in rehabilitation so they can find a path to healing,” said Gabriela Hernández, the program’s founder.

From a space at the civil association’s facilities and through visits to neighborhoods, communities, rehabilitation centers, and schools, the preventative program maintains contact with young people as young as 11 years old, having detected an increase in crystal meth use in this age group.

“We’ve realized that art doesn’t just convey a superficial message; it helps process emotions and our inner selves. When young people discover art therapy or music therapy, they gain a different perspective on life,” they shared.

“Ranchero Pandillero” has a recording studio and an art workshop that provide free spaces for teenagers, promoting hip-hop culture and graffiti—practices that strengthen a sense of belonging and spread messages of peace.
