The mayor of San Miguel de Allende, Mauricio Trejo, sparked controversy after referring to a group of business owners from San Luis Potosí as “nacos, nacos, nacos” (a derogatory term for lower-class people) after they were involved in a brawl with municipal police over the weekend.
The mayor stated that the confrontation began at a business located a few meters from the main square and spilled out onto the street, where Public Safety officers intervened and were attacked by those involved.
According to official reports, at the time of the police intervention, the business owners allegedly acted arrogantly and assaulted the officers, which led to their arrest and being turned over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Trejo publicly defended the police officers’ actions and justified his statements by claiming that the term referred to behavior, not appearance.
“Tackiness isn’t about a hairstyle; tackiness is about unbearable, reprehensible behavior on everyone’s part,” stated the mayor of San Miguel de Allende.
During subsequent statements, the PRI mayor detailed that those involved attempted to use their influence to avoid legal consequences after the altercation; furthermore, one of them threw a glass at a security officer.
“This weekend, there were four businessmen, I believe around 50 years old, from San Luis Potosí, trying to pull strings,” he affirmed.
He added that, following the incident, those detained were transferred to the Public Prosecutor’s Office and that the legal process was proceeding according to the law.
