Located on the extension of Santo Domingo, on the edge of the Atascadero neighborhood, the building has served various historical purposes: it was a silk factory, a convent, and later, a landmark of lodging in the city.
The site was acquired in the 1940s by the Peruvian artist Felipe Cossio del Pomar, who adapted it as a residence for art students. During that time, it became a meeting place for intellectuals and international figures such as Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral.
By 1948, the place had been transformed into one of the first tourist hotels in San Miguel de Allende, with 51 rooms and amenities such as a swimming pool, sauna, sports courts, and green areas.
The hotel closed in early 2026 with the expectation of renovation; however, demolition recently began. A notice posted at the site indicates that the work has permits from the Urban Development Department and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), although no information has yet been released regarding what project will replace the building.
