Las Fuentes is one of Guanajuato’s protected natural areas and one of the smallest in the state. Often overlooked, it is located in the municipality of Juventino Rosas.

The site takes its name from the nearest community and is situated just 6 kilometers from the municipal seat, making it a popular destination for locals.

This protected natural area is about to celebrate 27 years since its official and legal designation by the authorities. It encompasses 109 hectares along the edge of a ravine, thanks to the rich flora and fauna it harbors.

As for the flora, the area boasts species such as mesquite, palo blanco, casahuate, copal, garambullo, guaje, willow, nopal, and tepegüaje, among others.

The fauna inventory indicates that the area features a stream and two important springs that support a variety of species. The area is home to seven amphibian species, 90 bird species, and 16 mammal species.

Of these species, 17 are threatened or require special protection due to declining populations. Among the affected animals are frogs, chameleons, lizards, ducks, hawks, eagles, and bats. A reduction in the presence of insects essential for plant pollination is also a possibility.
