An airport for San Miguel de Allende, authorities analyze its construction

Already in 2017, the then government of Ricardo Villareal had reported on a private investment for the construction of a new airport in San Miguel de Allende, however it never happened.

León.- Years ago, in 2017, during the administration of Miguel Márquez Márquez, it was announced that an airport would be built in San Miguel de Allende, but the project was never carried out. Today, the plan is in the hands of the federation, since the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation is analyzing the construction of this work in the World Heritage city.

At a press conference offered by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) to present the 2023 infrastructure works program, Rogelio Jiménez Pons, Undersecretary of Transportation, announced that they are analyzing the construction of 3 new airports in the country.

The airports would be located in Costa Alegre, in Jalisco; San Miguel de Allende, in Guanajuato, and Ensenada, Baja California.

Regarding other works, it was reported at the press conference offered on March 30 that the new Tulum International Airport will be ready to start operating at the beginning of 2024.

News of the airport in San Miguel de Allende first emerged in March 2017. Fernando Olivera Rocha, Guanajuato’s Secretary of Tourism at the time, reported that it was a 100% private investment project.

The construction works would begin with the modernization and expansion of the aerodrome that already existed in San Miguel de Allende with an initial investment of 60 million pesos, which would be destined solely for the expansion of 2,000 meters in length of hydraulic concrete of the current runway.

“It becomes an airport, it will no longer be an aerodrome, it will be a C3 classification airport and, except for some final evaluation, it would be able to receive as an aircraft, the largest, which has a capacity of 48 passengers, but also private aviation”, reported Fernando Olivera Rocha on March 29, 2017.

In addition, it would also be investing in another project to bring vehicular traffic closer to the airport. They sought to create an access road that would connect the highway from Querétaro to the airport.

And for travelers, the construction of the terminal building was projected to begin in the second half of 2017. It would consist, among various things, of a space for migration, customs, and the Army.

The role that the municipality governed by, the then mayor, Ricardo Villareal, would be through an investment to lower the medium voltage cables.

Fernando Olivera Rocha stressed that, by carrying out this work, the populations of the entire north of the state would benefit. In addition, tourism from the north would be strengthened and it will also serve to facilitate private aviation for investors and workers from industrial parks in the north.

“These entrepreneurs are not skimping at all. They have great credibility in the project. And well, then, the fact that the general directorate of civil aviation triggers this investment”, indicated the Secretary of Tourism of San Miguel de Allende in 2017.
