San Miguel de Allende will continue a tradition that began 500 years ago

This Sunday, the first event of the patron saint festivities in honor of San Miguel Arcángel will be held, and the Municipal Government headed by Mauricio Trejo is preparing to continue this religious tradition that is about to turn 500 years old.

Through a statement, it was reported that in order to give this festivity the importance it deserves, the Directorate of Culture and Traditions continues to provide support to traditionalist groups to preserve the traditions and customs so deeply rooted in the municipality, which give pride and identity to the families of San Miguel, and which are so admired by tourists and visitors from Mexico and the world.

The start of this patronal festival will begin with the “Review of the Festival of Señor San Miguel”, this coming August 11, starting at 11 in the morning, when the indigenous communities request permission from their patron saint to celebrate the festival, where they make a massive journey, accompanied by an ox, starting in the Las Cuevitas neighborhood, until reaching the Historic Center, passing in front of the parish to present “the offering” and culminating in the San Juan de Dios pantheon, where a popular festival will be held.

With this pilgrimage, the festival of San Miguel Arcángel begins, which goes on a visit to different colonies and communities to return to the parish on September 29.

This “Review” is just the beginning, since until September 20th, at 5 pm, the traditional “Review of La Alborada” will take place, which takes place on the Friday before “La Alborada” and brings together the 3 traditionalist neighborhoods (Aurora, Cuevitas and Valle del Maíz), who will meet at the corner of Hidalgo and Canal, to take a walk in the Main Garden and finish their tour. This event is held for those adults and children who cannot attend the dawn of “La Alborada”.

“It is a night of joy, of music, of coexistence, because our relatives who are in other cities, in other parts of the world, return and we all go together to greet Señor San Miguel. Fireworks are something so special in the spirit of Mexicans that already in that atmosphere of the night of Señor San Miguel’s celebration, you are excited by the brightness, the colors of the fireworks, the noise and it is an early morning to be happy, content, and coexisting. It is one of those special realities that San Miguel has that can be boasted about. We San Miguel residents believe that this Alborada, this coexistence, this party, this festive spirit with which we live that night and that dawn are unique and that it is convenient for everyone to know it”, expressed Acacio Martínez, director of Culture and Traditions.

The great celebration of “La Alborada” will be held on September 28, with which the San Miguel residents will gather again to honor their patron saint, with a night full of joy, music, dance, horseback riding, “burning of monkeys” and fireworks, in the company of many visitors for whom it is also a tradition to attend.

To know

It is worth mentioning that the archangel Michael is the figure that represents the army of heavenly angels of God. The Christian religion believes that this saint is in charge of protecting it from the attacks of the Devil or Satan. Every September 29, the feast of the archangels of God is celebrated.

Considered the most important event in the city, the Fiestas de San Miguel de Arcángel, the Patron Saint of the Villa de San Miguel, are a celebration that is almost 500 years old.

Every September 29, the inhabitants of San Miguel de Allende take to the streets to celebrate and give thanks to the patron saint of the town for the favors received during the year. And precisely, as part of these celebrations, La Alborada takes place.

La Alborada represents a fight between the Archangel Saint Michael and Lucifer, which translates into a fireworks display.

The origin of San Miguel de Allende can be traced back to 1542, when the Franciscan friar Juan de San Miguel established the first settlement near the La Laja River, on the outskirts of the current town, with the name of San Miguel el Grande (in reference to the archangel), or San Miguel de los Chichimecas (the native population) Izcuinapan.

Since that date, 1542, San Miguel Arcángel was celebrated every year.

In honor of Ignacio Allende, in 1826 the town was renamed with the current name of San Miguel de Allende, birthplace of the hero of the Independence of Mexico.
