San Miguel de Allende will expand the José Manuel Zavala bypass. When?

The San Miguel de Allende City Council approved a request to the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) to transfer federal highway sections to expand the José Manuel Zavala Zavala bypass to four lanes, in the section from the underpass to the Alcocer road.

The roadways included in the request include sections of the San Miguel de Allende-Celaya and San Miguel de Allende-Querétaro highways.

During the regular council session, the council voted to modify the original request submitted in February, as previous measurements showed inconsistencies.

San Miguel de Allende requested the SCT to transfer federal highway sections to expand the José Manuel Zavala bypass to four lanes.

Mayor Mauricio Trejo Pureco assured that this modification will allow the request to move forward with the SCT, which will facilitate the start of widening work on one of the busiest roads in the municipality.

“This must be done carefully, because once the road sections are delivered, the municipality is responsible for their maintenance. Accepting road sections has a budget impact. We decided that the request should cover the stretch from Jalpa to just beyond the Sports Complex, including the most complicated and busy stretch, which runs from Querétaro to San Miguel de Allende,” the mayor explained.

Trejo Pureco affirmed that the municipality has the necessary budget for the expansion from the recently painted interchange, from the entrance to Jalpa to the exit to Celaya.

“We have the money to add another lane, build shoulders, and improve access to the communities in the area to ensure safe access. Furthermore, now that the El Caracol section is no longer under the jurisdiction of the SCT, it is up to us to develop a safe four-lane project, finance it, and implement it,” he explained.

The mayor added that restrictions on heavy vehicle traffic in El Caracol will also be tightened due to the risk they pose to residents and the numerous accidents reported over the past year.
