Exclusive street tacos spark criticism in San Miguel de Allende

A taco stand set up on the street generated annoyance, complaints, and even ridicule among residents and passersby in the area of Calzada de la Presa and Calzada de la Luz, a few blocks from the Historic Center of San Miguel de Allende.

The reaction wasn’t to the stand itself, which seemed like a makeshift business located right on the corner of the two streets, but rather because it was later revealed to be a private and exclusive service for guests of the luxury hotel in the area.

For the occasion, the Live Aqua Hotel decided to “extend” its catering services and offer its guests the experience of eating street tacos. Grills and a vertical rotisserie were set up across the street from the hotel, where at least four uniformed taqueros quickly served the diners—men in elegant suits and women in evening gowns—who enjoyed the dish and, apparently, alcoholic beverages as well.

The images quickly circulated on social media, where residents and passersby expressed all sorts of opinions: some pointed out that the incident is a clear example of the gentrification facing San Miguel de Allende; others criticized the fact that a luxury hotel enjoys privileges and “takes over” the public space.

This is not the first time the establishment has been criticized. On previous occasions, the hotel—one of the most expensive in the municipality—has been criticized for beginning construction of a walkway on federal land, allegedly to offer its guests tours of the Ecological Preservation Zone.
